Train Up A Child

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

In Cebu City, Philippines, a Haggai leader named Jane felt a calling to start a ministry to “bring inspiration and encouragement to every child to finish their education and to live joyful and responsible lives surrendered to our Savior Jesus Christ.”

This ministry, Tudlui — which simply means “teach” in Filipino — has served children and equipped their parents and leaders throughout mountainous regions surrounding Cebu City for four years. Although the city is well established, the communities that are being impacted by this ministry face several hurdles in order to reach these areas of impact. The hurdles consist of distance of travel, budget, and manpower. Despite these obstacles, Jane and the other leaders of this ministry have faithfully served these communities and supported them.

Jane holds a master’s in theology in Christian leadership and is an admirable leader and teacher with success in many areas of education including early childhood education, academic consulting, literary coaching, and more. Her decision to establish Tudlui ministries, alongside several friends, derived from a passion to share the Gospel and promote literacy and play within two mountain communities.

One of the ministries within Tudlui is the Sunshine TREEhouse. Within that, leaders teach Biblical truths to children through illustrations, crafts, games, and other activities in their own languages (there are over 120 languages spoken in the Philippines). Jane equips teachers to become the best classroom leaders they can be and expresses the importance and need for parents to love to read, in general, and read and study the Bible. Jane believes in “equipping to make an impact.” Through equipping the teachers, they have been able to create prayer books for the children in their native language, Cebuano, memory verse booklets, Kindergarten preparatory booklets entitled “One Step at a Time,” and Gospel bracelets using paracord.

In January of 2023, the leaders of Sunshine TREEhouse started a New Year fellowship with the boys and girls that they have been ministering to since 2019. Within this New Year fellowship, the children have been receiving biblical instruction and assistance related to literacy. Through this, the kids are encouraged to continue to learn about God and His Word.

Jane conducts many workshops within churches to “help mobilize them to continue to bring the Gospel to the next generation.” A recent workshop brought a dozen leaders from North of Cebu who desired to start a children’s ministry in the church and spread the Gospel throughout their community. Due to her commitment to continued educationand teaching, Jane was able to equip these leaders with the tools needed to begin this ministry. Several weeks after the workshop, these members of the community were able to start a children’s ministry in their church and have been overwhelmed with zeal for what the Lord is doing through them and the next generation.
