National Ministry:

A key component of our strategy to end Gospel poverty.

National ministry is a key component of our strategy to end Gospel poverty. Within 24 months after they’re equipped at our in-person or virtual Haggai Leader Experience (our international equipping program), each Haggai leader, on average, equips 251 others and shares the Gospel with 802 souls.

To best leverage their equipping, Haggai leaders create national ministries: organized groups that equip leaders nationally or regionally. Today, 76% of Haggai leaders impacting their nations were equipped at Haggai national seminars. Read the most frequently asked questions about this strategy below.

Defining the Terms

Regional or National Seminar: A singular event in which regionally or nationally based men and women undergo similar equipping as the Haggai Leader Experience, led by Haggai alumni associations. A seminar with people from one country is national, and two or more are regional.

Alumni Association: Many Haggai leaders want to collaborate to pass on their equipping and share the Gospel with their nations. As a result, they often form alumni associations at the local or city level, which may be either registered entities, or informal groups, depending on local laws. Often, these local alumni associations have joined together to create a national association, which will usually act in a coordinating role for all the alumni activity in a country.

National Ministry: National ministry is a general term used to describe all the Haggai leader-driven activities and programs worldwide — including regional or national seminars.

Breaking it Down

How many alumni associations are there? 504 alumni associations in 117 nations. The largest national ministries are in India, Indonesia, Brazil, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Does Haggai set up alumni associations? No. Alumni associations are grassroots movements formed by Haggai leaders. Still, Haggai does provide encouragement and assistance through a team of international representatives who work closely with Haggai leaders to identify future applicants for the HLE or VHLE.

How many nationally and locally equipped leaders are there? Over 101,600

The Difference in Equipping

What do regional and national seminars look like? Regional (two or more countries) and national (one country) seminars closely resemble in-person or virtual Haggai Leader Experiences. Residential in-person national or regional seminars last at least five days and are facilitated by an approved and equipped Haggai faculty member. Virtual national or regional seminars are completed over one month, covering 35 hours of learning time. Some national and regional seminars are a hybrid model, half virtual and half in-person.

In addition, alumni associations run a variety of local or area seminars that are tailored to meet local needs, including weekend and three-day events.

Why not send everyone to an international Haggai Leader Experience? The launch of the VHLE has helped increase the number of leaders who previously could not attend in-person equipping due to time or visa restraints, but many capable national leaders still face issues of resources or language barriers. National ministries extend Haggai’s world-class equipping to these men and women, equipping them to reach cultures and language groups where skills in sharing the Gospel are badly needed.

Haggai International Involvement

How are national ministries funded? Since 1988, Haggai leaders have raised local funds to run their national programs. For donors in the West, this represents massive leverage of their investment in Haggai International.

How much control does Haggai have over national ministries? The cooperation of Haggai leaders is spontaneous, not centrally organized. We have agreements with alumni associations to safeguard equipping standards, Haggai’s logo, and its trademark. In return, alumni associations administer these agreements with the local associations. The Haggai Global Advisory Council (HGAC) was established to build a bridge on a global level between Haggai International and Haggai leaders, which helps keep everyone focused on Haggai’s vision and mission. The group meets every three years and is composed of the presidents, secretaries, and executive directors of the various alumni associations.

Are faculty vetted and trained for national seminars? Yes. Alumni associations must provide proper faculty development to lead national seminars. Worldwide, there are now more than 1,000 national faculty members.

Do nationally-equipped leaders go on to the HLE or VHLE? Sometimes, yes! You can read about one leader who did so here.
