Living Beyond Your Past

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and one who is wise gains souls” is a profound message written in Proverbs 11:30 (NASB) and can be applied to the life of Brazilian Haggai leader Rafael Fernandes Carvalho.

“In a few words, I was born and raised in a Christian family, but I surrendered my life to Christ in my adolescence. When I was a high school student, I was led astray from Christ and started hanging around with friends who drank and used drugs. And I tried marijuana and drinking. One day, however, after getting extremely drunk, I called out for God’s help, and He covered me with His mercies and love. And He helped me go back to the paths of righteousness. Ever since then, I have been trying to live for His worship and glory.”

Rafael, whose name means “God has healed,” has dedicated his life to this powerful testimony of God’s saving grace and true healing in his life. He currently preaches and is making efforts to share the Gospel with his friends at work. He and his wife, Priscila, also feel called to provide missionaries with resources so that they, too, can accomplish their mission.

With a degree in financial management and a post-graduate degree in public accounting and fiscal responsibility, Rafael currently heads the Internal Control Unit of the Health Department of the Federal District in Brasília, Brazil. He is an entrepreneur and runs his own business in the medical sector as well.

Rafael and his wife, Priscila, provide resources to missionaries so they too can accomplish their calling.

“I like to talk a lot about a wide range of subjects, and I believe it can open doors to talking about my faith. During this pandemic, I have been very focused on sharing the Word of God with my three little boys at home. I also try my hand at writing about the Christian life, so others will know more about Jesus.”

One thing that Rafael has found lacking in his ministry is a program at church that equips others with how to end Gospel poverty. This is one reason why he participated in the Virtual Haggai Leader Experience last year. Before he was equipped through Haggai, Rafael expressed that he was a committed Christian and was acting in the role of a pastor at his church, yet wanting to be “more effective as a Christian leader.”

Since becoming equipped, he now reflects: “I learned how to develop tools so that I can preach the Gospel more effectively, and skills that will allow me as a Christian leader to better plan and organize our church’s preaching efforts.”
